Sea Swimming and the Port Nelson Summer Sea Series

If you are keen on trying the Port Nelson Summer Sea Series on Thursday nights then check out the Nelson Tri Club's website http://www.nelsontriclub.co.nz or go directly to the online register link - http://regonline.activeglobal.com/builder/site/Default.aspx?eventid=718322

A couple of pointers for those that were in wetsuits:

If your had a bit of space in wetsuit, ie, it wasn't clinging to you like a second skin, then you may have felt a bit of air inside your suit. If a wetsuit is too big then it can become more of a hindrance as it makes it more difficult to swim in the water. Hard though ... do you go for warmth ... or ease of swimming.

Also, to make your suit easier to get on and off, I often use some baby oil rubbed onto the end of the arms and the end of the legs.

We take to the water!

A huge congratulations to those of you that braved the rain and took part in Run Mahana on Saturday - an awesome achievement! I hope you enjoyed your bottle of wine after a nice relaxing soak in the bath on Saturday evening.

This Tuesday, we head to the beach for two weeks of sea swimming before breaking over the silly season. Meet at the Abel Tasman Statue carpark (off Rocks Rd). I am waiting to hear back from the tri club with exactly what to bring, in the interim, I suggest togs would be a good start, followed by a bright coloured swim cap (I do have spares if you need to borrow one), goggles if you have them, towel, bottle of water, and warm clothing to put on afterwards. If you do have a wetsuit then feel free to bring it.

See you there. 6.30pm.

29 November 2009

Congratulations to you all!

Well done to all of you who did Run Mahana yesterday - a wonderful achievement. So ... what's next on the goal list?

Running and Walking Program

Hope you all enjoyed your session with Brett at the Shoe Clinic and your time with the NBS Nelson Striders. Next week we will meet at the Botanics, Milton St (bottom of the Centre of NZ).

If anyone is coming in from Mapua/Moutere Highway, then Angela is looking for someone to carpool with. Give her a call on 03 544 1818 or alternatively email me and I can put you in touch.

If you are looking at other sports bra options then also check out http://www.sportsupport.co.nz/ - Lisa stocks sports bras designed specifically for larger busts.

Tonight's Session

This week we begin our running and walking program and we also have the pleasure of receiving expert guidance from physiotherapist Brett Meehan in his Shoe Clinic store. Brett will discuss the basics of correct support from your footwear and also some tips about what to wear to reduce chaffing and discomfort from clothing. The NBS Nelson Striders will take you for a run or walk (there will be both a running and a walking group, as there is every Tuesday at their sessions).

We will work the session as follows:

Surname A-N will go with the Nelson Striders first - 6.30pm at the 'Striders carpark', opposite the Suter Art Gallery on Bridge St (next to the Vets)

Surname O-Z will go to Shoe Clinic first - 6.30pm on Bridge St.

At 7.00pm the Striders will finish their run/walk at Shoe Clinic, so if you ran or walked first, you can then go inside and listen to Brett. Those that listened to Brett first can then walk straight out and join the Striders for a half hour run/walk.

See you tonight.

3) Select whole grains, whole grain breads, or high fibre breakfast cereals in place of white bread and low fibre varieties at most meals and snacks

4) Include fish, or dried peas, beans and soy products, or a small serving of lean meat or skinned poultry, at one or two meals each day

Yachting

Anyone who wanted to try yachting and didn't this time - let me know and I can forward your details to Anne, who can then contact you when an opportunity arises.

How did you rate the boating experience?

What an experience......
For someone who is not at all comfortable on the water the Waka Ama was such an enjoyable thrill....
Aroha, Marty, Karen and Nic (I think) were the ultimate trainers and are such a great advert for the Maitahi Outrigger Canoe Club. Their teaching and explanations were clear and easy to understand which for me removed my concern about actually being on the water. It is obvious that this group of people have a passion for their sport and it shows. It also rubbed off on the ladies who did the Waka Ama part of boating as several of us have expressed and interest in joining the club...

Yachting next week

Some reminders:
Start time- 6pm at the Tasman Bay Cruising Club – you will meet your skippers then go to boats by 6.15 and plan to be back around 8pm. That should give you 1-1.5 hours on the water- from leaving marina to back again.

Clothing comfortable warm trousers ( tracksuit type pants are ideal) warm tops, jackets. Shoes- sneakers/trainer types – white or light soled ( not black or dark soled). Sun block and sunglasses/hats – suggest you have both these on strings to stop the sea goblins eating them!!!!! If you have your own life jacket and want to bring it that’s fine- all boats will have enough. (no jeans or clothing with metal studs etc )

Please also remember to pop the red membership cards you received last week into your bags

Anne

Copelia B and Lisa W - can you confirm if you will be there or not on Tuesday - thanks, Amanda

See you tonight :)

Is it still on if it's wet?

Absolutely! Most have indoor venues so the sessions will still go on. If there is any change then I will post info here. Bring a jacket with you :)

Benefits of Massage - Taryn Beattie

Benefits of Massage for Athletes:
Therapeutic massage helps the body recover from the stresses of strenuous exercise, and facilitates the rebuilding phase of conditioning. The physiological benefits of massage include improved blood and lymph circulation, muscle relaxation, and general relaxation. These, in turn, lead to removal of waste products and better cell nutrition, normalization and greater elasticity of tissues, deactivation of trigger points, and faster healing of injuries. It all adds up to relief from soreness and stiffness, better flexibility, and less potential for future injury.
In addition to general recovery, massage may also focus on specific muscles used in a sport or fitness activity. For example, areas of greater stress for runners and dancers are in the legs, for swimmers in the upper body, for tennis players in the arms. These areas are more likely to be tight, lose flexibility, and develop trigger points.

Every BODY deserves a massage

This week's session

I am just putting the finishing touches to tomorrow night's plan and sorting out the indoor bikes. I have enough wind trainers but need two more bikes - if you have a bike that you would be able to bring and use (and let about five or six other women also use), can you please let me know. In preparation for next week's session - if you did not put a highlighter mark next to week 4 on the registration sheet on Tuesday to indicate your intention of coming to next Tuesday night's Indoor Tri and you do plan on coming, can you please email me to let me know so that I can arrange enough wind trainers/indoor bikes and assign you a start time.

The Indoor Tri involves five minutes of biking, followed by five minutes of aqua jogging and then five minutes of swimming (either widths or lengths). It is at your own pace, and you will complete it in small groups.

Also - if you know you won't be able to make any of the upcoming boating sessions can you also please email me so that I can ensure there are enough club members and boats available for those that are planning on coming. Please note that two of these sessions falls inside the school holidays.

Go Red for Women campaign

The annual New Zealand Woman’s Weekly ‘Go Red For Women’ issue is on the shelves this week. It has Carol Hirschfield on the cover and is packed with Go Red For Women tips and advice.

We'd like to ask for your help in capturing the hearts of New Zealand women by making them aware of the serious risk that heart disease poses to them.

Heart disease is the single biggest cause of death amongst women in New Zealand. Even worse is the fact that 74% of kiwi women over 20 are totally unaware of this statistic.

That means some of your friends, loved ones, work colleagues, or even family members like your nana or your sister could be blissfully unaware of something that endangers them.

We're determined to spread the word to every single one of these women, and we would really like your help to do this.

Because you are someone who supports the Heart Foundation, we've created a unique heart for you on our special Go Red For Women website. Please go there and enter your details to find yours. Then help us spread the word by entering the email addresses of female friends and family members you would like to alert about the risk of heart disease. We'll invite them to show their support by adding their hearts to the page and inviting their friends and family to do so.

Please also forward this message to as many women you can. If everybody in the 26% who are aware of the risks do this together, we can capture and help secure the hearts of New Zealand's women against heart disease.

Thank you,

Rt Hon Dame Jenny Shipley
Patron, Heart Foundation Go Red For Women

1.5m to survive

Would you stand on the spot with your back towards a truck as it drives towards you at 100km/h, knowing it was going to pass within a metre?

Plain Lunacy? This is an everyday occurrence for cyclists on our roads.

1.5m To Survive is your call to action!

There are nearly 1.5 million of us riding bikes in New Zealand, yet the Ministry of Transport's 10-year road safety strategy discussion document has little to address the safety needs of cyclists. We must act now, (right now...September) if we want cycling conditions on our roads to improve in the next 10 years. This is your moment to speak out!! Submissions close Friday October 2nd, 2009.

Take action!.....
1) Vote for 1.5m To Survive (online petition)
2) Read more on RideStrong's submission, or read the full press release here

3) Have your say- tell us your thoughts in the forums

Session 3: Swimming and Aquajogging

This week you will again spend time on swim technique with your instructors - Taryn for Group 1, Jo for Group 2 and Jon for Group 3 and Gaye will be there down the deep end for aqua jogging.

This week will run the same as last week, except those in Groups 2 and 3 that swam first will aquajog first this week, and those in Groups 2 and 3 that aqua jogged first will swim first. After twenty minutes, these two groups will again switch, then at 7.40pm Group 1 will have their chance to head to the deep end for some aqua jogging. Remember, if you only want to aqua jog and not swim, then head directly to Gaye.

I have emailed you all a form that I would like you to bring with you tomorrow night if possible. This is just some additional information that I need to have on file in case of emergency - it asks for the person for myself (or the relevant instructor) to contact should they need it, and any known medical conditions that we should be aware of. Please let me know if you are not receiving my emails.

Don't forget to get your entries in quickly for Run Mahana if you want to take advantage of the Activator discount. As a participant in the 2009 series Nelson Events are offering $10 off the entry price to either the 5km, 10km or Half Marathon event. Every adult finisher receives a bottle of wine straight from the cellar door of Woollaston Estates, and $5 of every entry goes to the Nelson branch of the Prostate Cancer Foundation so for $25 (10km and Half) and $20 (5km) it is exceptional value and a great motivator to get out on the pavements! This discount will no longer apply after the 30th of September so get them in quick!

Full information including training plans are available at www.nelsonevents.co.nz

Heart Foundation Support Requested

As one of the key funders for the pilot series last year and also involved in the current Nelson Women's Activator Series, the Nelson branch of the Heart Foundation is asking for your help. Please see below:

It is common knowledge that smoking is harmful to us all –smokers and non-smokers.

Research tells us that very few adults become smokers hence the drive by tobacco companies to ‘recruit’ young people into smoking. (They call them the ‘replacement smokers’)

Research also tells us that many people are prompted into buying tobacco products by the point of sale displays.

To assist young people to remain smokefree and support smokers attempting to quit it is important that tobacco products are removed from displays. Can you please support us in our attempt to ban tobacco displays by writing to your local MP and requesting their support on this matter.

Averil has sample letters that can be used or alternatively you can download one from www.protectourchildren.org.nz

For more information give Averil a call on (03) 545 7112 (mornings only).

A big thanks to Fiona Braid from CLM Riverside Pool for giving you some neat kicking drills last night. Remember, if you want to take your swimming further then seek out your instructors and talk to them about further tuition and what is available.

Session 1: Riverside Pool

The series kicks off tonight. As tonight is an introductory night and there will be a large number of ladies heading to the changing rooms can we work it as follows:
Those women that have ordered a swim pass (either at Riverside or ASB Aquatic Centre) come into the pool and go straight to the side of the pool (by the far wall). Those ladies that haven't ordered a swim pass can get changed first. Put a warm top on over your togs as we will be talking for the first 10-15 minutes before getting in the water. Then, once the talking and introductions are over, the ladies in their togs will hit the water, and the others can get changed in the change rooms. We will have two mini sessions in the water tonight.
Next week, we will rotate the swimming with the aquajogging, this is just for tonight. See you soon!

You should have received a confirmation email notifying you of your acceptance into the series - if you haven't, then email me and I can check that I have your email correct nelsonactivator@gmail.com

Spring Strut Stride is back for 2009

This is your chance to have fun with friends, family or workmates and be in to win some great prizes.

Spring Strut Stride is a game for teams of up to 10 people. If you have more than 10 - make two teams.

Each team sets a walking goal, for example, the length of the South Island. Each walk a member of your team does in a month adds to the total.

Just think - each time you walk to a cafe or a coffee with your friends, or each time you walk the kids to the playground, you're getting closer to your goal.

Annette Nistor on Protein

Protein needs of Athletes

What is protein?

Protein plays many essential roles in the body, it can be used in growth and repair or it can be burned for energy. Protein is a normal part of our diet and is found in animal and plant foods such as meat, dairy, eggs, fish, and chicken. These foods have all the essential amino acids (building blocks) that the body requires, however some protein foods such as legumes and grains are low in essential amino acids. By combining legumes with cereals such as beans on toast, lentils on rice, or nuts with grains such as a peanut butter sandwich, ensures the body gets adequate amounts of amino acids from a meal.

So does exercise increase protein requirements?

Muscle protein is always being made and broken down. Most of our protein comes from the diet. The recommended dietary intake (RDI) for protein in the general population is 55g a day or 1g/kg body weight daily. Strength and endurance athletes need nearly twice the RDI and endurance athletes about 1.5 times RDI.

Fortunately, the high food intake that most athletes have ensures a generous protein intake; usually well above requirements so supplementing is not required. Those athletes who may be at risk of eating too little protein are athletes who are in weight-restricted sports, fussy eaters and dieters. High protein diets are not necessary and run the risk of increasing dehydration, promoting calcium loss from bones and displacing other important nutrients from the diet. It is also unlikely to enhance athletic performance. Excess protein is not stored but rather it is used as an energy source.

Protein supplements do not offer any advantage over normal dietary sources of protein. Dietary protein can provide additional amounts of other nutrients like carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. If you are considering supplementing consult a sports dietician first before you spend all that money.

Lionel's Links

Sit back, relax and immerse yourself in this video found on Lionel's Oneflow website. Imagine/feel yourself swimming with this degree of balance, relaxation and flow as if you were recording the sensations for later playback. When you next go swimming carry those feelings up the pool with you and be astounded at how they cross-over into your stroke.

http://www.oneflow.co.nz/Oneflow/Videos.html

Better late than never ...

As promised here is a link to a pace chart (for running). I couldn't find my orginal but came across this one on the Christchurch Marathon website.
Go to www.christchurchmarathon.co.nz then click on Training and then on Pace Chart.
It is in km splits (so unlike my original which did have it by mile as well).
Remember that their are km markers up the Maitai Valley as well.

To use the chart - if you wanted to run a sub 2 hours half marathon, then you would need to run 5.41mins per kilometre, which equates to 28.26mins for 5km, 56,53 mins for 1o km, 1.25.19 for 15km and 1.53.46 for 20km. Bringing you home in 1.59.54 for the half marathon distance (in theory).

If you want more info on how to read a pace chart then flick me an email or give me a call.

Sessions with Gaye Evans

Well winter is upon us, and it’s getting too cold and dark to be on the beach at 6.30am, so I am planning to do some sessions at the NMIT gym at that time, starting from next week Monday 18th May. If you would like to come to any of these sessions please let me know what days, and provided enough people are interested I’ll do it. (6.30am on the beach will start up again 1st of September).

You can of course come at 9am (on the beach) four days a week, Mon, Wed, Thurs, Fri. Also I will do a 4.30pm session on Tuesdays, at the botanics, again, if enough people are keen. Or 7.30am on Saturday mornings at the beach.

I did a trial of lunchtime session at the botanics last winter,(45mins, 12.05 to 12.50) but didn’t get many takers, however I am available to do that Mon, Wed, Fri, if it suits you.

So, email me and let me know what sessions you are keen for and I will collate the numbers and let you know what will be on. If a group of you (or workmates/friends) have some other time/place that would work for you let me know, and I’ll see what I can do.

Or alternatively if you have a friend or partner (or you if not competing)who wants to help marshall at the Women's Tri - they help out, and you can get the t-shirt. Let me know if you are keen to take up the offer.

Taylors Nelson Women's Triathlon Cycle Course

Well done for completing the cycle course last night - for those that couldn't make it, the course is as follows:

Branford Park, Maitai Valley Road. Along Maitai Valley Road, turn as directed (Maitai Valley Motor Camp), return to Nile Street (Turing Right - take care). Left into Tasman/Brook Street, head up the valley to the third bridge - right onto the Miro Street bridge, right into Westbrook Tce, then right into Seymour Ave bridge, followed by a hard left back onto Brook/Tasman Streets to the second Roundabout. Right into Nile Street followed by a Left into Domett Street.

Dismount when directed by marshalls. Run/walk bike to 'catchers'.

Final Road Cycling Session

Tomorrow evening is the final of the road cycling sessions, and this week we will leave the park and venture out onto the roads in order to cover the Taylors Nelson Women's Triathlon cycle course.

We will still meet at the park at 6.30pm and will return there so if you are driving into town then still park outside Trafalgar Park. If you arrive early, then get warmed up and cover a few laps round the cycle track first (best place to keep practicing the skills you've learnt over the last few weeks).

Well done to our Activator Women who completed the Port Nelson Big Bay Bike yesterday - 70km of pure pleasure!! Don't forget about the Tussock Spirit of the Moutere coming up on the 15th of March (all riders receive a bottle of wine when they finish).

Session Two of Road Cycling

Tomorrow is session two of our road cycling series - if you didn't make it last week it doesn't matter, rust off your bike and come down. 6.30pm at the Trafalgar Park cycle track (inside the park).
We will focus on how to ride confidently behind another rider and how to pass safely. If you are already super confident then take this opportunity to get some mileage in and ride some laps with others - remember it is 520m per lap, so it doesn't take long before you have cycled a fair way.

For those of you that are keen to continue your running and walking after the Striders Summer Series, they go back to their regular run and walk tomorrow night from opposite the Suter Art Gallery on Bridge St at 5.45pm.

See you at the park,

The entry form for the 22nd Taylors Nelson Women's Triathlon on April 5th 2009 will be released this coming Wednesday, the 28th of January. To download your copy visit http://www.nelsonevents.co.nz/WomensTri.htm

The training program is now online - this year there is a beginner or intermediate level plan to choose from. Click here to read more.

New for 2009 is the Port Nelson Partners Challenge - you complete the Womens Tri and your partner completes the Port Nelson Bloke's Day Out (March 29). Your times are added together and the couple with the lowest cumulative time is the winner. The rules are simple - same house, same bed! All entrants go in the draw to win a weekend escape for two.

If you are keen to get your workmates involved then why not enter the NBS Corporate Challenge - two staff members from the same workplace complete the triathlon individually, their times are added together and the team with the lowest cumulative time is the winner. All entrants go in the Major Corporate Spot Prize Draw. You may like to sign up to one of the Corporate Packages - click here to read more.

There are also family challenges - so check out the website for more details. 2009 sees the introduction of the Port Nelson Kauri Kids Aquathon on April 3rd. If Mum does the Women's Tri and Dad does the Bloke's Day Out then Junior gets to enter the Aquathon for free. Watch the website for more details.

Entry for the Taylors Nelson Women's Triathlon is limited to 500, so make sure you get your entry in quickly when they are released on Wednesday.

Only two more weeks of sea swimming left

Only two more weeks of sea swimming left so if you haven't made it down to the beach yet, then make it tonight! 6.30pm at the Abel tasman statue carpark entrance to the beach. Remember to bring a cap and goggles to make it easier on yourself.

If you are really not into sea swimming then head along to the Striders Summer Running and Walking Series. Tonight is 3km, from the Maitai Golf Club. It's called a Turkey Trot and the idea is to guess what time you will do - no watches allowed! 6pm start - all welcome and no entry fee.

13 January 2009

Second session for 2009

I hope you are ready for the second session for 2009 tonight. 6.30pm at the beach - meet at the entrance via the Abel Tasman Statue carpark.
If you have a swimming cap and goggles you will find it much easier. Last week we spent the majority of time in the water, and we plan to do that again this week. Lionel is going to give a few pointers on entry and exit along with continuing practise of sighting techniques. It might be nice to bring a bottle of water for getting the sea taste out of your mouth once you finish.

Congratulations to all of you who completed the Shoe Clinic Nelson Striders Half Marathon or 10km on Sunday - results are now online on www.nelsonevents.co.nz so check out the superb performances of our active women!!

Happy New Year to you all!

I hope your Christmas and New Year Celebrations were enjoyable and that you are now hanging out for the 2009 section of the Nelson Women's Activator Series!!
We start back this coming Tuesday evening at 6.30pm. Meet at the beach entrance from the Abel Tasman Statue carpark. I would suggest you come along already dressed in your togs, with a warm top on (it can get rather chilly on the beach, especially when you're already wet).
See you there!
