'Racquet Sports'

This week we begin our 'racquet' sports. I haven't heard from everyone yet as to their preference of sport, if you wish to participate in the next two sessions, then email me urgently with your choice of either Badminton or Croquet. Please note that Golf is now full.

I will email with more details on each of the sports tomorrow.

A reminder that Golf is based at the Nelson Golf Club in Tahuna, Badminton is based in Richmond and Croquet in Nelson City itself. You will do the same sport for both weeks.

If you have access to golf clubs, please bring these with you to the session, similarly if you have a badminton racquet please bring this with you. If not, there will be spares you can borrow. If anyone does have badminton racquets at home (even if you're not doing badminton on Wednesday), we would like to get hold of a few more - please consider lending these for the next two weeks if possible.

Keep active,
Amanda

17 February 2011

I hope you enjoyed your time swimming over the past three weeks, and you found the instructors tips and drills useful to carry on with. Swimming is one of those skills that does take time to master, so remember to persevere with it.

If you wish to take further lessons either in a small group or one on one then contact details have been emailed to you. You may find getting together with other Activator Woman who were in your group and having a few small private lessons may be beneficial, cost effective and of course fun!

Kate has adult swim lessons at Riverside Pool for a five week period ($50) for Level 1 & 2 (which equates to our Group 1 & 2) on Tuesdays 5.20 - 5.50pm and on Wednesdays for Level 3 & 4 at 5.50 - 6.20pm.
Give her a call for more info.

Next week we have one evening of sea swimming - we will meet on the beach directly in from the Abel Tasman Statue Carpark (Rocks Rd end of the beach).

I did notice a number of you struggling with keeping your hair out of your eyes and mouth when you were swimming in the pool, investing in a swimming cap may well be the way to go. Please bring a swimming cap with you for our session in the sea (if you don't have one, I will have some spares).

If you have a wetsuit, feel free to use it - I was in the water at seven on Monday night and it was beautiful so they definitely aren't needed. We will be there for an hour (not in the water for the full time though), however, if the water does get too cold, we will not make you stay in.

If you are concerned about swimming in the sea, we swim parallel to shore and always at a depth where you can stand up. Members of the Nelson Triathlon Club will be there to give you tips on how to navigate a course, swim around buoys, how to enter and exit the water, and we will practise swimming around some 'human buoys' to put these skills into practice.

The week following we will begin our two weeks of racquet sports. The three sports are golf, badminton and croquet. Golf will be based at the Nelson Golf Club in Tahuna, Badminton in Richmond and Croquet in Nelson City. 6.30pm - 7.30pm. Please start thinking about which sport you will like to opt into, as I will ask you soon to email me stating the three sports in order of preference. You will do the same sport for both weeks.

Swimming tonight!

Well done to Shelley, Lynley and Lois who all completed the 10km Striders Summer Series last night! Top effort!

Tonight we start our swim sessions at Ngawahtu Pool. The pool entrance (at the end of Ngawhatu Rd, off Suffolk Rd) is kept locked by gate, so if you are running late for any of the sessions, you will need to park outside the entrance and walk through to the pool.

I will be at the gate to let vehicles in between 6.20pm and 6.25pm tonight, then will lock the gate. If you arrive after that time, you will need to park on Ngawhatu Road and then walk through to the pool. One of the conditions of our use of the pool is that this gate is kept locked at all times. I will then pop back out to the gate to allow those arriving later for their 7.00pm swim start to drive in (between 6.50pm and 6.55pm), and will then pop out just after 7.00pm to allow those from their 6.30pm start to exit with their vehicles.

If you are not sure how to find Ngawhatu Rd, easiest way is probably to turn left at the lights at Stoke (if driving from Nelson), head down to the roundabout at the end of the road, turn right, and travel along this road until you see Ngawhatu Rd on your left.

Just a reminder again that Ngawhatu Pool is heated, so please bring a bottle of water with you to sip on during your session.

Group 1 will be using the area of the pool closest to the changing rooms, Group 2 will be on the opposite side of the pool and Group 3 will be in the middle lane of the pool.

I have emailed the groupings to you all.

See you tonight!

24 January 2011

2011 resumes next Wednesday!

Well, just over one week to go before we head back into weekly Activator sessions.

Next Wednesday, the 2nd of February we will resume with swimming at Ngawhatu Pool. For this, I ask that you email me if you intend on coming to the sessions as I need to put you into appropriately sized and ability matched groups. If I don't hear from you, I will assume that you do not wish to attend the swimming sessions. We have three weeks of swimming, so if want to participate but there is one session you know you will be absent for, please also let me know. Similarly, if you know 6.30pm is tricky for you to be on time for, then let me know and I can put you in a group that will enter the pool slightly later (still finishing at 7.30pm).

Ngawhatu is a 25m indoor heated swimming pool, not as wide as Riverside, therefore it is important that I know numbers in advance to manage the smaller sized pool for groupings. There are changing rooms and showers available, and as it is heated, I would suggest you all bring a bottle of water to sip on throuhout your session. If you are feeling nervous about swimming togs, don't be, others arel feeling exactly the same, and this is not a beauty pagaent, we're concentrating on swim confidence and technique, not what colour or shape your togs are. You can reach the bottom all the way down the pool, and Group 1 will always be next to the side of the pool.

The pool entrance (at the end of Ngawhatu Rd, off Suffolk Rd) is kept locked by gate, so if you are running late for any of the sessions, you will need to park outside the entrance and walk through to the pool.

Please email to let me know which of the three groups you would classify yourself.

Group 1: Would not feel confident swimming one length
Group 2: Could swim one or two lengths
Group 3: Could swim many lengths confidently

Swim Passes
If you would like a registration form for a swim pass, let me know and I will email this through to you. You then need to take this form to the pool reception and pay directly over the counter (I wll forward a list of names of those that wish to purchase one to the receptions of each pool later this week, so that they are aware of who you are).

Riverside/Nayland Pool - $45 for a three month swim pass (Feb, Mar, April)
ASB Aquatic Centre - $100 for a three month swim pass (Feb, Mar, April)

These deals are fantastic prices! Perfect too, if you are going to participate in the Taylors Nelson Women's Triathlon (April 10th). Remember, too that if you enter before the 6th of February then you go into the draw for a $150 Relish Restaurant Voucher. More details on the tri can be found at http://www.nelsonevents.co.nz/WomensTri.htm along with some generic training plans.

Striders Summer Series
Tomorrow night, is the Striders 5km down the Maitai Valley - it was great to see Rosa, Bridget, Shelley and Carolyn at the 3km last week - especially in the wet and windy conditions!
